๐Ÿ‘‹METOBEE’s First Setup guide

How to Use / First Setup

METOBEE is a subway navigation app covering Greater Tokyo, Kansai, and Northern Kyushu โ€” route search, real-time arrivals, service notices, station exits and boarding positions, all in one place.

Let’s walk through the setup screen you’ll see after installing.

๐Ÿ’ก Before you start

Everything here can be changed later under More > Settings. Once you’ve picked a region, you can also tap Skip in the top right.

01 Choose your language

Six languages available

Your choice applies to station and line names too, not just menus. You can switch back to the original Japanese anytime on the main screen.

02 Choose your region

You can select more than one

  • Greater Tokyo โ€” Tokyo ยท Yokohama
  • Kansai โ€” Osaka ยท Kyoto ยท Kobe
  • Northern Kyushu โ€” Fukuoka ยท Kitakyushu

For Greater Tokyo and Kansai, METOBEE covers JR and private railways as well as the subway โ€” in Japan’s major cities, subway-only routes often won’t get you there.

Regions you skip are downloaded when you switch to them later. That uses mobile data, so downloading over Wi-Fi in advance is easier.

03 Downloading data

Usually under 30 seconds

Line, station, timetable and fare data are saved to your device, then verified automatically.

This is why timetables and route maps still work where your signal is weak โ€” underground passages, platforms, or when you’re low on roaming data.

04 How do you use the subway?

This decides which passes we show you

  • Local โ€” You live in Japan or travel there often
  • Tourist โ€” You’re visiting

Daily commuters and short-stay visitors need different things, so METOBEE only shows the passes that fit.

From here on, Skip is available in the top right.

05 Do you use a commuter pass?

Register the section it covers

Choose Yes to pick your departure and arrival stations and the route your pass covers. Once registered, that section is excluded from fare calculations.

Stop somewhere else along your commute, and METOBEE shows only what you’ll actually pay on top.

06 Do you have a travel pass?

Tokyo Subway tickets, JR passes and more

Registering a pass changes two things.

  • Route fares โ€” Covered sections are excluded from the total
  • Map highlighting โ€” Covered lines stand out on the home route map

Haven’t decided which pass to buy? Skip for now and register later under More > Pass.

07 Set your fare type

Passenger and payment method

Choose Adult / Child, then IC card / Paper ticket.

That second one might be unfamiliar: in Japan, the same trip costs a different amount depending on how you pay. Using a Suica or PASMO? Choose IC card. Buying tickets at the machine? Choose Paper ticket.

Route results show fares based on this, so match it to how you actually travel.

08 All set

Review and start

Your region, usage type, commuter pass, travel pass and fare type appear in one summary. Anything you skipped shows as None, and you can go back to fix it.

Tap Start METOBEE and you’ll land on the home screen with your region’s route map. Change anything later under More > Settings โ€” when your plans shift, when you buy a pass, or when you’re travelling with a child.
